Academic advising is integral to fulfilling the teaching and learning mission of higher education. Through academic advising, students learn to become members of their higher education community, to think critically about their roles and responsibilities as students, and to prepare to be educated citizens of a society and global community.
Academic Advisors will strive to deliver an academic advising program that is committed to excellence and that seeks to foster and support student success. Moreover, Encouraging students to be active, responsible learners who take full advantage of the many opportunities the university provides in the areas of academics, research, and community and global engagement.
At the College of Computer Science, academic advisors are dedicated to teaching students how to access essential information and acquire the skills to make well-informed decisions that will lead to the achievement of their educational, career and life goals.
Undergraduate academic advisors are committed to providing quality, holistic advisement services that meet each student’s unique needs.
Academic Advising goals are to assist students to:
- Make a successful transition to the university.
- Engage in an exploration of career goals related to their personal interests.
- Continuously assess academic progress towards meeting their stated goals, clarify potential avenues to reach those goals, and make appropriate adjustments as necessary.
- Utilized campus resources and support services.
- Understand and take responsibility for knowing university policies and procedures, including the importance of adhering to deadlines.
- Recognize the relationship between academic progress and career goals.

- Mentor and role model. Advisors will model appropriate responses and actions in dealing with the academic issues, planning and collegial interactions.
- Advocate. Advisors will assist students in problem solving and development of strategies to overcome challenges.
- Resource. Advisors will ensure students are aware of the academic support available at the college, including websites, labs, libraries, and other resources.
- Institutional observer. Advisors will inform the Academic Advising Unit of errors in the course of scheduling and other problems encountered by students, so these can be addressed and corrected.
The rights of the student on his academic advisor are as follows:
- Communicate directly or electronically with the academic advisor through all available channels.
- Access to course registration services such as addition or deletion via the academic advisor.
- Discussion with the academic advisor regarding his/her academic progress.
- Making use of the available services at the college and university, which are guided by the academic advisor.
- The academic advisor provides the necessary guidance and guidance to the student on an ongoing basis until graduation.
- All files and information of the students are treated in strict confidentiality and in the context of the requirements of the case.
